Tennis
is King
(If You're not a Golfer)
In the Naples area, Golf is King...but only if one is a Golfer.
If one is a tennis player...into far more exercise..desirous
of more free time to be more productive, Tennis is King. Tennis
is available at any level and part of the amenity package at
all major planned communities. Even planned communities built
around golf will provide major tennis facilities complete with
tennis professionals, pro shop and lights for night play. If
one wishes to find out what is happening in Naples Tennis or
where to call for weekly tennis certification test, check Thursday's
Sports Section in the Naples Daily News.
Almost all tennis courts in the area are fast-drying green composition
courts. Even with the summer rains, play can generally be continued
almost immediately. Regardless of the time of season, the courts
are filled from 8 AM to Noon with play picking up again later
in the afternoon.

Want competition?
You will find yourself playing all over the area, particularly with
fun and competitive league play, at all levels.
In February, you will have the opportunity to watch Jimmy Connors,
John Mc and Bjorn and party play in one of the final Nuveen events
of the year.
Public Tennis Centers
There are three significant public tennis centers, aside from the
planned residential communities. These facilities are open to all
residents and visitors. Stop by these public tennis centers - it's
a great way to meet other tennis devotees:
Cambier Park, 8th Avenue South, 8th Street South
- Naples' major downtown facility.
- Composition courts, total 12.
- Full support staff.
- Lighted courts.
In a broad sweep of awards categories from different presenters,
Cambier Park racked up three major awards. The facility was dubbed
a United States Tennis Association Outstanding Facility for 1999.,
A Tennis Industry Magizine Court of the Year, and Track Builders
Association Facility of the Year.
In May, Cambier hosts one of the largest tennis tournaments (600
entries) covering ALL levels of play from beginner to Open levels.
Naples YMCA / YWCA, on Pine Ridge Road, east of Airport.

In October, the 'Y' hosts the area's largest tournament (700 entries).
This is a social event with a BBQ at the completion of the tournament.
Vanderbilt County Park, on Vanderbilt
Beach Road north of Pelican Bay.
- Composition courts, total 8.
- No staff.

Residential Tennis Communities
There are two major residential tennis communities. Both have fully
staffed pro shops and will help you find opponents or partners:
Naples Bath & Tennis Club (NBTC) on Airport Road, south
of Pine Ridge.
- Established 15 years ago.
- Gated Residential community consisting
of condos, attached and detached villas and single family homes.
- Membership in NBTC requires a nonrefundable
initiation fee.
- Club is privately owned with food and
beverage minimums.
- Fully staffed pro shop.
Sterling Oaks, on Tamiami Trail, north of the city.
- A recent development.
- Gated residential community consisting

of the Club and provided use of the clubhouse and Jr. Olympic

The Naples area is full of friendly people. Meeting people who quickly
become friends is easy, especially if you play tennis. You'll soon
agree with many that say, that if you're a tennis player, TENNIS
IS KING. |
